India told WTO that the US move will affect the export of $ 7.6 billion from India. India said that this would levy a fee of $ 1.91 billion on goods coming in the US. According to the proposal, India will increase the fees on certain products coming from the US. This means that those products will now be taxed more. India said that it has the right to impose fees using its rights. India also said that it would take a decision after 30 days.
How much America has taxed?
On 8 March 2018, the US imposed security fees on some steel and aluminum products. He imposed a fee of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum. This rule came into effect from 23 March 2018. Then on 10 February 2025, the US amended the security measures on the import of steel and aluminum which came into effect from March 12.
India says that the US did not inform the WTO committee about this. The US decided to implement security measures, but did not tell WTO. India says that it is affected by this. So he has requested America to talk about this.
Why this fee imposed
The US replied that this fee is necessary to adjust the imports of steel and aluminum that threatens the US national security. That is, America says that this fee is necessary so that the security of the country remains. The US also responded to the European Union (EU) when he requested to talk about it.
What right to India?
An official said that it was compensated for the damage caused by the security measures taken by the US. India has the right to take this step under the Security Agreement (AOS). That is, India has the right to impose fees in response to America’s fee.
India says that the steps taken by the US are not according to the GATT (General Agreement on Tariff and Trade) 1994 and AOS rules. India said that there has been no talks under AOS. Therefore, India has the right to impose a fee equal to the bad impact on America’s trade.
