The ministry will change the Motor Vehicle Act. ‘Demerit and merit’ point licensing system will be added to it. An official said that demerit points will be found on breaking traffic rules. At the same time, merit points will be given to those who behave well and helpful.
Accidents are not decreasing even after increasing fine
Road accidents are not decreasing even after increasing fines and penalty since 2019. Every year more than 1.7 lakh people are dying in road accidents. Sources say that the fear of cancellation of driving license will be more alerting people. It has been observed worldwide that people follow the rules for fear of cancellation of license. Now crimes are also being recorded in an electronic way. This will help the police to take immediate action.
S Sundar Committee also reviewed the Motor Vehicle Act
In 2011, a committee was formed under the chairmanship of S. Sundar. This committee reviewed the Motor Vehicle Act. The committee recommended the penalty point system for drivers. The committee had said to fix different points for every crime. The committee also said that if more than 12 points are made in three years, then the driving license should be suspended for one year. If a driver collects 12 points even after suspending, his license should be canceled for five years.
The government is also going to harden the rules for renewing driving license. If a license holder has broken the traffic rules, he will have to give a driving test before renewing the driving license. Till now it was not necessary to give a driving test before renewing DL. An official said that these steps would improve road safety. The ministry is also going to make rules for electric vehicles. It will be necessary to get a learner license for electric vehicles with a capacity of less than 1,500 watt and speed of 25 kmph. The ministry will make separate rules for Lerner License.
