Patna. India has informed Pakistan about the postponement of Indus River Water Agreement. Due to this move of India, Pakistan is shocked by the water crisis in Pakistan and is telling this situation a declaration of war from India in a way. Actually, the Indus Water Agreement is an unconventional agreement between India and Pakistan in which Pakistan was given rights on one side. The special thing is that after this agreement came into existence in 1960, the need to balance it from India’s point of view was being experienced for a long time. Let us know that under this agreement, 80% of the water continued to go to Pakistan and India was able to use only 20% water. Now when India has taken a step about it, then another agreement is being mentioned which has a relationship with our other neighboring Bangladesh and its connection is also connected to Bihar with West Bengal.
Let us know that Bihar has been continuously demanding a review of the Ganges River Water Agreement with Bangladesh. Not only this, he had also demanded to end it by taking a step in Bihar. In the last January, Bihar’s Water Resources Minister Vijay Chaudhary had clearly stated that our opinion was not taken in the 1996 Ganges water agreement and Bihar was ignored in the agreement. Actually, the Minister of Water Resources says that a major reason behind the flood problem in Bihar is the silt that is filled in the Ganges river. They even say that Ganga is filling with silt in a way, then Ganga is dying from the other side, that is, it is ending.
Know the accounts of the sharing of Ganga river water from Bangladesh
In fact, the Bihar government believes that not only floods, but also its aquatic animals, including the flow of Ganga, are also having a lot of side effects and there has been a change and deterioration in the ecology balance. The Minister of Water Resources said that due to the disposal of all these pyre, renewal of the agreement should be renewed to resolve it. Let us know that under the agreement between India and Bangladesh, there is talk of giving 35000 India and 35000 cusecs to Bangladesh in 70000 cusecs. Under this agreement, if it is only 70 to 75000 cusecs in the water sharing of Ganga, then the flow that is with India will remain with India and the remaining 35000 cusecs of water will go to Bangladesh. If there is more than 75000 cusecs, 40000 cusecs will remain with India and the remaining flow will go to Bangladesh.
Farakka Dam is a big reason for floods in Bihar!
Now the demand has arisen that the agreement was to be reviewed after 30 years, which will be completed in 2026. The next year the agreement is to be renewed and the points of the problem are to be considered. Bihar says that Bihar gives Bangladesh a lot of Ganga water, while states on the banks of river Ganges are using their water fearlessly. There, electricity projects are made and barrage is also made. Not only this, Ganga water is also being used for irrigation, while Bihar has to get permission from the Center for every work. Bihar believes that the quota of water going to Bangladesh should be fixed equally for Bihar as well as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. Let it also be told here that the West Bengal government also said in June that the West Bengal government was also not taken opinion in Ganga Water Treaty from Bangladesh.
Mamta Banerjee wrote a letter to Prime Minister Modi
Actually, West Bengal also believes that due to this agreement, there is a huge problem of silt and erosion in the Ganges river. States like West Bengal and Bihar have expressed many concerns on this treaty and have also blamed Farakka Barrage for this. Let me tell you that in the year 2022, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Prime Minister Modi and expressed concern over the continuous erosion on the banks of the Ganges in Malda, Murshidabad and Nadia districts. He also demanded a reconsideration of the Center’s decision in 2017 to withdraw the extended jurisdiction of the Farakka Barrage Project Authority. At the same time, Bihar has also blamed Farakka Barrage for increasing silt on many occasions. In a meeting chaired by PM Modi in the year 2016 too, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar demanded the removal of Farakka barrage on the Ganges river and said that it is suffering more than the profit.
