Maharashtra government will bring social media law

Highlights

  • The Maharashtra government will stop campaigning by making reel on social media.
  • In IPS and IAS office time, you will not be able to do self-promotion.
  • The new law may be introduced in the next assembly session.

Maharashtra The government is soon going to bring such a law that can end the freedom of government officials to make reel in ‘Singham Style’ on social media. Especially when the IAS and IPS officers post a video praising themselves on Instagram, the background plays fast music, and words like ‘Singham’, ‘Robinhood’ float on the screen – now it can be difficult to do so.

Bila’s name
The government has named this bill – The Maharashtra State Government Employees Social Media Regulation Act, 2025. It is looking at it the General Administration Department (GAD). Parinay Phuke, a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council and close to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, gave this information. He first raised this issue in the House in December 2024 and then discussed again in March 2025.

Self-worship will no longer run in office time
Phuke says that this law is not an attack on anyone’s personal freedom. But during the office time, the attempt to show itself ‘great’ on social media will no longer approve. That is, the officers who try to become a ‘hero’ in office time should now be cautious.

Some officers carry a cameraman, make themselves a hero by making videos
Phuke told that many officers are using departmental social media resources for their promotion. Some also keep a separate cameraman with them, who also make videos at 6 in the morning. Many times videos of officers’ meeting are also posted, where they scold the employees – so that they can show themselves’ strict but honest ‘officers. These videos find millions of views and create image of officer’s ‘Robinhood’.

Taking credit for government policies or giving political statement will be forbidden
Phuke made it clear that the new bill will also decide that no government official will take credit for the government’s policies on social media himself, nor will it comment on anyone. Making a political statement will also be strictly forbidden.

There will be a statutory way to highlight deficiencies
However, if an officer wants to highlight the flaws of the system, then statutory routes like ‘Whistleblower Protection Act’ can be used for it. That is, it is not wrong to raise a finger on the system, but its method should be correct.

Bill may be introduced in next session
Phuke claimed that the government will soon introduce this bill in the next session of the assembly. He said, “You write, this bill will definitely be brought next time.”
