The Standing Committee of Parliament has sought information about what action was taken against the social media influencers and social media platforms working against the country after the Pahalgam terror attack from the two major ministries monitoring the information. The committee has asked to provide information by 8 May 2025.

Sources said that the Stading Committee on Communication and Information Technology headed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey has taken into its notice that some social media influencers and platforms in India are working against the interest of the country, which fears violence.

Letter written to two ministries

The committee has sought details of the action taken to ban such forums under the IT Act 2000 and Information Technology Rules, 2021 in a letter to the Ministries of Information and Broadcasting and Communication and Information Technology. According to sources, the letter has been sent to the concerned secretaries of both the ministries and they have been asked to give information by May 8. Many social media handles have been banned after allegedly posted material against national security interests.

26 people died in terrorist attack

On April 22, at least 26 people were brutally murdered by terrorists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Most of them were tourists. India has blamed terrorist groups associated with Pakistan for this dreadful incident. Committee member and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saket Gokhale said that he has no information related to this issue.

Dignity of parliamentary committees

He claimed that according to the rules, the chairman cannot issue any statement without the approval of the committee. Gokhale posted on ‘X’, as a member, I have neither been given any information nor I have signed anything saying. He wrote, under parliamentary rules, no chairman can issue any letter without the approval of the committee. Parliamentary committees have dignity and they should not be hijacked for political agenda.
