Why is there an uproar over Imtiaz’s death?
The body of a 23-year-old youth was recovered from a drain in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir. He was taken in Hirasak to question Lashkar about his relationship. The police claimed that he tried to escape, in which he jumped into the drain, while his family accused him of death in custody.
The deceased was identified as Imtiaz Ahmed. According to the police, they took him to a hideout for identity, when he jumped into a strong current drain and drowned in an attempt to escape. According to the police, the role of Imtiaz came to light during an investigation into an encounter on 23 April. Two terrorists escaped after the encounter with the security forces. Police claimed that Imtiaz confessed to knowing about the whereabouts of Lashkar during interrogation, after which he was taken to his place mentioned.
Police said that during this time he jumped into the drain to escape and drowned. The police also released drone footage in which Imtiaz is shown jumping and flowing into the sharp stream. However, Ahmed’s family has strongly opposed the statement of the police and accused the police of disturbances. The family has accused of murder in custody. This incident has spread outrage in Kashmir and political parties are demanding accountability.

Itu said that Imtiaz was a poor man who returned the valley 15 days ago after working outside the state. He said, LG Saheb should at least instruct the Home Department not to disturb the common people without any reason. Everyone is hurt by the incident of Pahalgam and our eyes are moist, but it is not right to bother people, arrest or torture them. This is unfortunate. Such incidents should not happen in future.
